Why do restaurants serve larger portions? (breakfast, calories, consume, cheap)

I do not mind large portions. I remember the times when some French chefs try to do something called nouvelle cuisine, small, pretty and expensive... people left the restaurant after dinner and go to McD or similar to have something to fill their stomachs.
I don't exactly eat out a lot, relatively speaking. And when I do it tends to be either high or low end -- seldom that middle ground of chains like Applebees, Olive Garden, Ground Round, etc. If I go to Burger King or McDonalds I know I went there 'cause the smell of grilled grease was just too much for me and every couple of months I give in, but get what I pay for [usually dollar menu]A little grease, salt, and super-sauce go a long way to remind me why I don't eat like that often. I find high-end is usually about right [they make their $ on booze so I think you get "normal portions" which are filling because of the quality and richness of ingredients]. The middle ground seems to overload portions, quality is just OK, filling because of so many starchy foods - which we all crave I guess[pasta, potatoes, biscuits etc]. I think they do it 'cause we think we're getting more bang for our buck, they buy medium grade stuff in bulk and and can make it pay. Only places that fall outside of that for me is my local non-chain family-run places; pizza, smoked BBQ, Jamaican jerk, and ahh --grease trucks if you can find where they park now!
MOST of the casino buffets that are very inexpensive are generally worse than what you will get at a Golden Corral. If you are not spending $20+, the food is generally pretty bad, especially in Las Vegas.
Even at $7.50 a head, I can do a lot better at home for a lot less.

Is there anything worse than Golden Corral? I hope I never find it. God that place disgusts me. It's not the food (well sort of) as much as the people that go there. I've seen parents let their kids run around and I've seen kids put their fingers in the mac and cheese.

I agree, but at least OP doesn't have to do the dishes!
I love getting large portions at restaurants, especially when most meals cost $8-15 these days. I usually eat one half at the restaurant, and take the other half home in takeout to eat for another meal later.
For local restaurants, I LOVE when they give out large portions, because you can always get a take-out box and re-heat it later or the next day. I don't see this as gluttony, just good value!
