Seeing the thread about what annoys you the most, makes me wonder what are some of the best restaurant experiences you have ever had.

Mine was actually at an IHOP. The server was very impressive, and needs to go someplace else to make more money. I was there for a friends birthday celebration, and there as maybe like 12 of us. As you know at Ihop, so many choices w/in one meal. He didn't write anything down, even had to excuse himself to answer the phone, some people switch spots and he still got everyone's order 100% correct and to the right person.

I used to be a server, so that is why this experience really sticks out in my mind.

DH took me to dinner in an old country inn to celebrate Valentine's Day in the early 80's. It wasn't really Valentine's Day - we had a blizzard then - but we went the following Sunday night, and the dinner crowd at the inn that night was very sparse. We got the waitress to tell us some of her experiences, because the inn was reputed to be haunted and was featured in a volume of Berks County, Pa. ghost stories. It was also featured on a popular tv show of that time, "That's Incredible" - a program that often did stories on haunted places.

We didn't see any ghosts that evening, but the food was excellent and we enjoyed the waitress's stories. The dark, creepy aviance of the restaurant and the surrounding countryside on that cold winter's night added to it.

Friend's restaurant, a great restaurant here that also puts on shows with dinner. Got a half price voucher and took along a friend, we sat in a large table of 6 and socialised with other people. Food was among the best I've had in my life and show was very good! Atmosphere was nice, staff were not snobbish at all (for being a fine dining place).

Dinner at the chef's table overlooking the kitchen, with the chef serving us each course and telling us about it, and we could watch everything being made.

I recently ate at a Brazilian grill and it was amazing. The cost was only 22$ a plate, but nonstop action. You basically flip over your little cube they give you and they start coming by all night with different premium cuts of beef, chicken and fish. They also had real crab sushi that was included in the cold salad bar that started the meal. The service was great and the food was even better.

My most recent "YUM!" experience was at an Argentine restaurant in Mexico City. The funny thing is--it was a buffet-style restaurant which is a dining style I try to avoid. (Like a lot of folks, I tend to overeat at a buffet.) But when we walked in, it smelled so wonderful that we decided to give it a try. The buffet food was outstanding: fresh, flavorful, hot dishes were hot, and cold dishes were cold, the salads were crisp and fresh, and the fruits were perfect. Plus, the server delivered hot empanadas and crusty bread along with the best relish (garlic, olive oil and secret herbs) to schmeer all over the bread. Another plus---the grilled meats were also included in the fixed price of the buffet. Honesty, it was too much food. But at 129 pesos per person (that's about $10 USD), the bargain and the high quality of the food and service was out of this world! The only "extra" charge was for the drinks. I ordered a Pina Colada--and it was made with fresh coconut and pineapple--to die for!

A restaurant in Jamaica. The food was locally sourced and made right in front of me and was sizzling hot and amazing. The people were jovial and vibrant. It was an experience to be had.

The buffet at Le Pavillon Hotel in New Orleans.
First off, when you walk in, the hotel is absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful chandeliers, paintings, furnture. I think it's mostly 19th century décor, I'm not sure but it is something to behold.
In the dining room, you have the pasta bar served by Chef Pat (I hope she's still there. This is all pre-Katrina. She was so sweet.) She would make any kind of pasta dish you want with the fixins (sauces, veggies, meats).
Then you have the buffet bar in the middle of the room. They served gumbo or any soup, salads, breads, desserts.
The seating - all tables, no booths. Tablecloths, cloth napkins, shiny, clean silverware. The chairs were deep cushioned and comfortable. When you were finished eating all that comfort food, the chairs made it hard to leave!
Between the hotel and dining décor and the great food, it was an aesthetic experience to dine there.

My honey moon when we ate at Gary Danko's in San Francisco. They treated us like royalty and they made us a special dessert on the house.

On the beach in Zihuatanejo. Restaurant took fresh yellow fine tuna we had just caught on a charter that day and cooked it for us. Watched them clean it and prepare it in an open kitchen as we sat watching the sunset from our beach side palapa.
