Having been to China, I know that "Chinese" food in the USA is not Chinese food eaten in China.

This is news to anyone? Pretty much all "ethnic" cuisines in the US are "americanized."

Doesn't everybody know this?

My SIL's mom is from Taiwan, and eating her cooking isn't exactly going to PF Chang's. Fox News is kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel with this bit of late-breaking news.

Edit - my favorite is "#3: The Hipsters Made it Popular!!!" The horror.

Not news to anyone, but I was surprised that most of veggies used here are not found in China at all.

LOL

I love reading people post their "favorite" Chinese dishes and they mention chop suey or General Tso's chicken. I like that the posters like the dishes but they are not Chinese at all. Then I read the opposite spectrum of eating live snake

Yeah, do we WANT it to be authentic?

I always read growing up that chop suey was purely American, invented by Chinese-Americans during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad...but stuff I've read since then notes that it's pretty closely related to cooked up leftovers prepared in parts of China. Who knows?

You kind of have to figure that most commercially prepared ethnically-inspired cuisine in other countries is not going to be the same as traditional dishes prepared by families at home in those countries. I've yet to eat "American" food in foreign countries that tastes like/is prepared as it is by my mom at home in the Midwest, myself.

Not gonna lie... I'm not necessarily disappointed to go pick up sweet and sour pork or cashew chicken, versus beef tendon or chicken feet, to be honest. I'm not gonna cry if it's not authentic.

I know that with any subject, everyone does not know about it. I have no idea how many people may know about ethnic foods being Americanized, but I'm certain everyone doesn't know it. I know it, but there was a time in my life I didn't and tomorrow there will be more who don't know it and some who learn it.
