Researchers fear that a relentless and virulent fungus could cripple the world's banana monoculture.

Two weeks ago, at a conference in South Africa, scientists met to discuss how to contain a deadly banana disease outbreak in nearby Mozambique, Africa. At fault was a fungus that continues its march around the planet. In recent years, it has spread across Asia and Australia, devastating plants there that bear the signature yellow supermarket fruit.

I HATE bananas. My folks made me eat an apple or a banana every day because it was "good for me". Guess what two fruits I never eat now. Bananas have a certain amount of potassium but other than that there are dozens of fruits that are just as nutritious and taste better.

I love bananas and hope scientists come up with a solution ... I had not heard of this fungus!

Bananas are delicious in cereal, in smoothies, even in margaritas and daiquiris (really!). I like them plain too -- they are to me one of the few fruits that taste great with coffee.

Even when they get too ripe, I can always find uses for them, like adding them to muffin mixes to make the muffins more moist. Yum!

Remember Kirk Cameron, the actor in Growing Pains? During that time, he got religion, and eventually left the show, supposedly because it was inappropriate or too risqué, or some such. He made a video aboutnhow the banana was perfectly created by God - the same Cavendish banana that was specifically created by Chiquita because the previous monoculture banana succumbed to disease.

Here's the video.

I knew who Kirk Cameron was/is, although I pay as little attention to him as possible ... which is why I never knew he had anything to say about bananas. HE'S bananas. OK, silly joke, I got up too early today and am sleepy.
