Yeah I can put away some food, but I'm skinny, so I doubt people notice me doing it as much as the fat person at the next table.

The only ones I go to a Brazilian steakhouses. Yes, I do eat too much when I go. The thought of other AYCE places makes me a little ill, as I don't normally like hot food that sits around. I want it right away off the grill or whatever.

Someone posted this here before, but your post reminded me of it.

Usually it's a waste of money for me. My favorite local restaurant has a buffet Sunday brunch and it's expensive. I might get 2 pancakes, some fruit, fresh baked haddock, danish, and then go back for seconds on some things I didn't take the first time.

I wish I could stuff my pockets or purse full of waffles and sliced meat, some baked apple dessert--but that would be a real mess by the time I got it home!

I usually fill up on 2-3 plates of expensive seafoods that would cost a lot a la carte, like lobster, Alaskan king crab legs, oysters, steamers, etc. I usually have salads as side dishes, and skip starches like rice and pasta, as they are too filling.

It means I can try a little of this, that and the other, oh and what's that, let's try a bite of that too. Without paying an arm and a leg, and without a lot of guilt if I don't like it enough to finish it.
To me they're sampler restaurants. This comes from someone who often orders the sampler plate as my main course at a regular chain type place. What can I say, I like variety and trying new things.

that it's time to find another place to stop at.

Friends like places like the Country Buffet and will go out of their way to stop there. After much fanfare about how great the place was, they dragged me to one a couple hours from home. Calling if awful would be an insult to the truly awful restaurants I've been to. Even my friends, while still raving about how great certain items were on the buffet, admitted it wasn't all that good ... and left portions of their favorite items on their plates. At their insistence, I tasted some of the items, with only a bite of many. That's all I needed to know about the food there.

Locally, the Country Buffet that was in our town was shut down by the food authorities. They didn't keep a clean kitchen and they couldn't keep the food from being contaminated by many of the patrons and their kids ... it was an unsanitary mess. The place shut down one day with no notice to the employees except for the closed sign on the door when they showed up for work.

When I see Chinese or Mexican or Italian AYCE buffets in our region, it's a red flag for really mediocre food, the worst of the worst. Typically, these places have you thinking kind thoughts about the steam table food service from your elementary school ...
