I'm not sure how best to describe the type of restaurant I am thinking of. You order and pay at a counter, get your own drinks, and a server brings your food and busses the table. More formal than fast food or like a Chipotle or Five Guys in my opinion, but not a sit down restaurant. Some examples I can think of are Nandos, Bobby's Burgers, Noodles & Co.

I don't know that you technically have to tip at places like that, but I generally throw in a buck or two for their trouble.

I tip at the table just like any other restaurant. Doesn't really matter when they collect my pay. I tip when I've finished eating.

We tip at places like Golden Corral, (which we rarely frequent) but a place like 5 Guys, no. All they do is bring your meal, we usually even clean up our table before we leave.

At Noodles, I'll leave a few bucks on the table. My daughter had a friend that worked at one, and she said they pooled all tips for the shift. Now, at this location, they wanted an employee party, so they all decided to put in 25% of all tips for a set period of time to help pay for it - but that was just location.

Isn't there usually a bowl or something near the register? That's what I've always seen before I put a buck or two in there.

I usually leave a small tip on the table ... not a 15-50% tip as I would in a full-service restaurant. But more in the vein of what I'd tip a pizza delivery guy, like 10-15%.

I agree about Five Guys, I was just using it as an example of a place on the nicer side of fast food and I never tip there. I was more interested in what I would call the next step up where they bring you food on real plates and clean off the tables.

Some do, and some have an option for a tip on a card when you pay, but I'm not going to tip before I've even sat down.

Sounds like Sizzler's and there one just leaves the tip on the table like any other restaurant.
