Anyone else try Fiber One bars?

The reason why I ask is because I think these bars are the culprit of my gastrointestinal problems I've been having the past few weeks.

The past 2 weeks I've been having stomach problems all day and night. My stomach would cramp constantly, and worse of all I felt incredibly gassy. It was embarrassing but I had to slip a few SBD's at work due to the cramps. My digestive system was all out of whack and I was very concerned.

I then realized that a few weeks ago I bought several boxes of Fiber One bars to snack on for breakfast and during lunch. Each bar provides a good amount of fiber, and the taste is great (caramel and peanut butter). I put two and two together and I stopped eating the bars a few days ago. My stomach feels a lot better now.

I did a little 'research' and I think I'm not alone in this:

Any time you suddenly increase the fiber in your diet, you should do it gradually. You will get gassy until you're used to it. That goes for suddenly eating more veggies for fiber too.

My husband has to take fiber supplements and we've found that these Amazon.com: Vitafusion Fiber Gummies, Sugar Free, 90-Count Bottle: Health & Personal Care seem to do the job without any major gassiness or increased bathroom urgency. (they're cheaper at Sam's) My dad ate about 30 of them because he thought they were candy and he was a little gassy, but he's always gassy. My kids ate a bunch after that because they wanted to dutch oven each other, but it didn't work.

It's the chicory root extract, or "inulin". It can cause extreme gas if you're not used to it. It may help to take a Beano with it (now available in generic at WalMart).

I find it interesting that Olestra has disappeared from the market because of side effects yet products with chicory root and maltitol have spread like wildfire. Olestra got lots of negative publicity but these fake sugars and fiber compounds always seem to slip through under the radar... Try eating more than a handful of sugar free gummy bears....

I too am sensitive to chicory root extract however like the calorie savings and taste that comes from a canister of olestra pringles which produce hardly any negative reaction when eaten with other foods.

My body reacts alright to larger quantities of sorbitol but does not like maltitol. That means I can tolerate sugar free pancake syrups which I love and are made with sorbitol pretty well but avoid a lot of other sugar free candy products.

They never had one single effect on me, desired or otherwise. Guess I'm just not sensitive.

I never eat more than one of them a day which usually works for me.

Hat's off to your kids. Sounds like something me and my brother would have done.

Its more likely the sugar alcohols that caused the problem. Read labels and be careful when eating anything with sugar alcohols.

That's what happens when you don't read labels.
