10 Meals that are cheaper to order in

Okay, maybe I'll agree with the sushi and the pad thai. But since when does it cost $22 to make a rotisserie chicken at home?

Agreed. The author [probably lives in NYC and shops only at the most exclusive markets.

Maybe they buy free range chickens and have them imported from China?

I agree with the lamb. Lamb is incredibly expensive here, and then you have to buy the tzatziki and pita.

That does seem really high....though whole chickens are getting to be very expensive. I pick them up on sale and toss in the freezer when they are 1.49$ a pound or less (so 5$ to 6$) .......but regular price is about 15$ to 19$ here....so yeah, a rotisserie chicken would be cheaper if I couldn't plan ahead.

All those 'cost to make' are way high.....even at regular pricing.

wow, I don't know where you live but we get them here for between .99 and $1.29 lb at Sam's and on sale for about $1.29, so a 5 lb chicken is going to cost about $6.00. The rotisserie chickens here run about $4.99 to $6.99, depending on where we get them. The only place we have paid an higher price was outside Toronto 2 years ago: $14.00 for one, I think and it wasn't even decent.

I can get a fantastic rotisserie chicken for about $10.
Raw chickens can be found @ 2 for $10 if you look for sales.

You can make pad thai pretty cheap at home. I've even made it by first having to soak the tamarind pods.

They put in the whole cost of each ingredient into the dish. You are not going to use a whole bottle of fish sauce to make pad thai.

This is the technique I used - delicious

Pad Thai for beginners « Chez Pim

and steak burrito - please - super easy and cheap

Possibly, but I'm going to guess that they're factoring in everything it takes to make it. The equipment, the spices, all the ingredients. Not just the main one.
