Why can't I find THIN bacon any more? The type that you can actually crumble after cooking? The type that gets crisp and shatters with the first bite?
Don't get me wrong. I like the other kind. In fact I like all kinds of bacon. I just want to know if there is a national brand that is decent and THIN-sliced.
There is: Oscar Meyer plain hardwood smoked, no other words in the title. Cook it very well on relatively lown heat until it's quite dark and there's plenty of rendered fat. It will crumble wth the lightest touch.
I have the same problem! I love my bacon thin. All that I have tried (even the Oscar Meyer recomended above) have been inconsistent in their thickness. The only thing that is consistently thin is the Oscar Meyer fully cooked kind. I buy that for my husband because he likes to have a slice when we have "veggie" suppers, but I don't much like the taste or smell....smells like ham instead of bacon.
I have actually rolled it out with a rolling pin, though, and that works. Just wish I didn't have to resort to that. If you're going to cook the whole package, just put the whole slab between two sheets of plastic wrap and have at it. You can cut them in half if they're too long when you get through.

I like thin cut bacon as well. I haven't had a lot of trouble finding it, though there are more thick varieties than there used to be.
