I saw this article a few days ago, too. And I also keep potatoes and onions in the fridge. And melons. And tomatoes. And coffee. And garlic. And sometimes bread.
Clearly I'm not the sharpest knife in the... fridge.
It never occurred to me to put any of those things in the fridge. It just seems logical to me. Thanks for the thread, though. I'm going to make pesto today using unrefrigerated garlic and basil, and I'm going to mix it into my unrefrigerated red potatoes. I'll drink coffee I keep in a kitchen cabinet. I don't have any tomatoes, but they sure would be good stuffed with this potato/pesto mixture, and they would never go in the 'fridge.
I do put cut onions in the fridge, but never raw ones or like you say, potatoes. Most of those suggestions, though interesting are pretty well known I think. As for tomatoes, I have always kept them on the kitchen counter unless, like now, I have so many I have to put some in the fridge. I think the only thing I didn't know was about basil.
Oh, yes, I do put melons in the fridge, they do not keep that well otherwise. I keep them on the counter until I am sure they are ripe, they I usually slice of dice them, put them in an airtight container and in the fridge they go.
I don't put that stuff in my fridge either, but I saw that most of my friends do. Not sure why. Some said that they just want to clear the counter space, or make sure that there is nothing edible for the ants or roaches
Do you keep them in the dark? Light may have more to do with it than temperature.
This.
My mom buys onions and potatoes by the sack and just leaves them in the dark.
