I've never really understood why they ever had a beginning or why a claimed 30,000 spectators would show up in Coney island on July 4th to watch people force food down their throats.

they just did this contest here in CI, I think it is disgusting, repulsive and sickening, not to mention really unhealthy.
shoving 68 franks down your throat just to say you did it, is really sick. I cant see what kind of gratification one can get by this achievement?

I agree completely burdell and as KathrynAragon posts, a) it does make me sick to my stomach just thinking about it and b) I am not even remotely interested in watching such a 'train wreck', and c) I do hope that common sense (or a lawsuit) will have them done away with.
I always eat hot dogs very carefully because I've heard they're very easy to choke on. Of course, a lot of things would be if you were shoving large amounts into your mouth as quickly as possible.
Such contests make me feel sick to my stomach to even think about anyway. I'd love to see them done away with.

To be fair, I've never understood why people go bungee jumping, skydiving, even rock climbing - and those activities can be dangerous too. But as long as they've signed a waiver and understand the risks, shouldn't adults be allowed to have fun however they choose? Should they really do away with these, simply because YOU find them disgusting? I don't find them appealing, either, but to each their own.
And before anyone throws in the obligatory "fat Americans" comment, these are actually most popular among the (usually slender) Japanese men... they always win, too, even at Coney Island! I was just there in May, and most of the recent winners' names were Japanese.
