As part of the BBC's season looking at sustainable food, we take a peek in the fridges of people in cities around the world and ask what motivates their food choices.

Majy Gibboney is a high-school teacher from Washington DC, in the US.

Let's see ... I've got gravy left over from Thanksgiving, 10-day-old chili, mozzarella cheese that's a month past its expiration, a bag of lettuce mix that's becoming mush in a day or two, limp celery, a couple of squishy tomatoes ...

And then there's the edible stuff.

Let's see-2% milk, Pepsi, Diet 7UP, beer, leftover roast chicken, cranberry sauce, leftover gravy, butter both salted and unsalted, Smart Balance, ricotta cheese, sour cream, mayo, ketchup, mustards-brown, coarse grain, dijon, horseradish, tabasco, eggs, english muffins, jellies-apricot and strawberry, hot peppers, gherkin pickles, bacon, summer sausage, variety of dips my Mom sent, carrots, celery, onions, yogurt-think that's it.

Soy milk, rice milk, various juices, hickory smoke mustard, lemons, limes, oranges, tangerines, apples, celery, lettuce, tomatos, pomegranate, medjool dates, carrots, salt-free ketchup, assorted flavors of liquid stevia, lots of bottled water, ginger, basmati rice, raw almonds, lemon chili pistachios, vegan mayo, and a couple of other things way in the back that ive forgotten about.

In the freezer there's alot of frozen veggies, frozen fruit, the ice cream maker bowl( i make vegan vice cream with), and alot of ice cubes.

my UK fridge : Onions, Carrots, Lentil and Bacon soup, Foie Gras, freshly squeezed OJ, Apple and Pear Juice, Lots of Mineral Water, Basil and Honey Mustard, Dijon Mustard, Basil Ketchup, Lemon curd, Maple Syrup, Thickly cut Marmalade ( I'm going away so the firdge is pretty empty!), Salted and unsalted Organic butter.

Freezer : Smoked Salmon, Gravadlax, Lots of assorted Canapes, Mini Chocolate Puddings ( for New year's day), Three Bean soup, Tomato soup, Lentil Soup, Red Cabbage and Apple mix, Chestnuts, Beef and Wine Casserole.

Chili and gravy got tossed yesterday, along with moldy carrots, moldy pumpkin, and lumpy half-and-half.

Hands off, I need all that stuff for when I come back from the in-laws ! Believe me I will need comfort food big time....
And therapy, a long holiday and if I wasn't a teetotaller I might just start drinking as well.
