Actually, you can make a really good chicken and dumplings from the canned chicken. I know it looks kind of icky, but once you strip the meat off and use the broth (which only looks slimy because it has congealed like any broth does when cold), it can be pretty easy and useful, especially if you are stocking up for emergencies.
I haven't looked lately to see if my supermarket still carries them. It's doubtful.
My local Albertson's carries Sweet Sue canned whole chicken. I get into the mood on occasion so I keep some in the house. It's expensive to very expensive on Amazon, but there are a number of good reviews.
One reviewer states "...you can look at pictures of this and think it's grouse..." Really??? Someone actually thinks chicken in a can looks like grouse ?

Yeah ...... manufacturers do have advertising employees who write out glowing reviews. On any ratings page, it's best to disregard the best and the worst reviews.

There's a huge difference in taste and texture between canned whole chicken and the smaller cans of boneless chicken breast, which are quite a bit like tuna in texture, though more expensive.
But by all means, experiment!
