I open the egg boxes, too, to get a dozen with none broken.

ok, so this bothers you, but would you feel better to get home and find the ear of corn is old or there is very little corn on it. I don't know any other way to judge the quality of the corn without peeling the husk back a little. Could you explain why this bothers you? Are you concerned about germs or what? I just can't imagine why this is a problem and I know very few people who buy corn without checking.

Michelleleigh: we have the same thing at our local WalMart. We can husk the corn right there. I think it is a great idea.

I, too don;t see the problem with this. Look at it this way, the people before you have done some of the work for you, the peeled and discarded corn is abviously rejects, so bypass those.

Or, you can avoid the unshucked corn altogether and buy the already shucked and prepackaged corn.

How is it any different from people picking up apples and looking at them, and then putting them back?

I find it fascinating some of the things that annoy other people.

First of all, I shuck the corn at Wegmans, in the bin provided for that purpose. Before doing that, I select ears that look good and have a rounded, not pointy, top. I can tell with just a small peel if it's what I want. If not, back it goes.

So I won't be refraining from that practice.

You and me both. I pull back the husks to be sure it isn't old with dented nibs or has worms. I look underneath the strawberry package for mold. I smell the tomatoes. I push the ends of cantalopes. I thump the watermelons.

As others have said, if you don't like others handling what you plan to eat, buy the prepackaged vegetables and you're to go.

If you see corn that has been partially peeled and left behind, you probably wouldn't want them anyway. There's apparently something wrong with that ear, and someone else has gone through the trouble of finding that out for you. Skip it and find another.

I peel back the husks, and I don't stop at the tips. I want to see the whole ear. If there are any worms, I'm not buying it. Sorry that upsets you OP, but I'm not stopping.

What they said. I don't see the problem. Around here there are signs to NOT shuck the corn in the store. Frankly, I like it best when cooked right on the grill IN the husk. Just trim off the loose leaves. The silk disintegrates and use pot holders because the husk is hot. It's much tastier and easier than boiling all that water.
