I didn't before but as I've gotten more educated on food and nutrition I now completely avoid them. There is nothing redeemable about them. If you want to avoid sugar, avoid sugar and sweeteners altogether. If you must absolutely sweeten, use a natural source of sugar that is as little processed as you can find.
Aspartame made my DD bladder go into very painful spasms. She thought she was dying.
DH has finally stopped drinking them after years of me trying to convince him to. He says he feels better....more energy, not so sluggish.
I've never consistently consumed them...they taste foul to me.
I had the same issue, but it wasn't just aspartame. I went to a urologist because of the painful bladder issues and was told to cut out caffeine. That didn't work so I decided to give up all the artifically sweetened drinks I was consuming and just like that all my bladder problems went away. I don't completely avoid them, I will consume some items in moderation. Lucerne makes a yogurt I like with Splenda, and it doesn't seem to negatively impact me. Likewise, I can have an aspartame sweetened drink like diet Vernors or Sierra Mist occasionally and I'm OK, but diet Coke or any of the ones made with Acesulfame Potassium seem to be the worst aggravators.
Whenever I have the choice (manufacturer may change a product), I go for food & drink with sugar rather than newfangled ingredients used for sugar "replacement".
Am not counting calories and I prefer the flavor of sugar to that of substitutes-have no motivation to choose those alternative formulations.
