Default Has anybody tried raw milk?

I've talked to people who drink raw milk straight from the cow. They say that it tastes as fresh and good as ice-cream, nothing like the commercialized milk you buy at grocery stores today.

Has anyone had the pleasure of drinking unhomogenized, unpasteurized raw milk? What has been your experience?

I spotted a farm down the road that sells it, and I'm hoping to pick some up soon. I can't wait to try it.

Here's a link to a website that tells you where you can find real milk: http://www.realmilk.com

It's the only milk I drink. You'll realize how little what's sold as milk in the store resembles real milk. We can sell/buy raw milk legally in my state. We used to sell a lot.

I have had it straight from the cow and straight from the goat. Much richer. I do prefer it chilled, but even at "cow temp" it is better than processed.

I feel that some foods have become so commercialized that they've lost their original taste. I feel this way about eggs too. Nothing tastes so good as a fresh laid egg from a chicken in your backyard.

I've heard farmers say the same about vegetables. Instead of growing them for taste, they grow them to survive travel and weeks in a grocery store produce section. Carrots and tomatoes don't taste like they used to!

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to having some raw milk.

My experience, too. Chilled but either way, it is terrific.

We raised dairy goats and a dual purpose cow for milk. What's sold on stores shelves doesn't look, taste, smell or feel like milk; I thought I hated milk until I had fresh whole milk. We can buy and sell raw milk in Maine as long as we follow a couple of advertising rules. GreenMachine, you're right about vegetables being grown to withstand transportation. A tomato doesn't have to be ripe, taste like a tomato or have grown long enough to develop full nutrition, it just has to resemble a tomato. Did you know egg yolks aren't naturally yellow when a hen is raised on ground? Or that eggs don't move in the shell when lightly shaken if they're fresh?

This thread makes me want to look for some raw milk. When I was a kid, that's the only kind of milk I ever had. Good stuff! We even made our own butter from the extra cream. Raw milk puts the other to shame. It has been a few years, though, since the last time I had raw cow's milk, (I've had raw goat's milk in the past year or two, from a friend's goat. That was a first, but it was pretty good). I've noticed that, like many other things, the government is playing Nanny, (and I don't mean as in "goat"), and saving us from ourselves. They've made it more difficult to get ahold of raw milk, unless you own your own cow, or have a friend who can give you some. They have regulated raw milk up the backside!

Raw milk, fresh eggs, and locally-grown fruits and vegetable are some of the best eating you can get. And, for those of us, who are meat-eaters, if you can get a side, (or half-side), of local beef to put your in freezer, you'll never want to eat the stuff from the grocery store again. And, fresh venison can't be beat! It's no wonder that as a nation, we are sickly, and overweight. We don't eat well, at all.

That's all I use to drink was raw milk. Loved it. Fresh eggs are the best---not at all like store bought. And fresh veggies....now those are the way they should taste. My husband had about a 1/4 acre he had a garden on in CA of all places. We had about 30 chickens that ran around another 1/8th of an acre. He worked his a$$ off growing a huge variety of fresh veggies and that's all we ate when they were in season. You can't even touch that kind of flavor with store bought..not to mention the nutrition. Not only are they grown to maturity but freshly picked and they don't lose those valuable vitamins. Yeah, this is what food os suppose to taste like--fresh!! A person can grow enough veggies for personal use just about anywhere...but it is lots of work but so well worth it.

I used to buy raw milk from a local farmer who sold it in wide mouth gallon jars.
The wide mouth made it easier to dip the cream off if you wanted to use it for something else.

This was back about 1960, but I think it must have been against the law because he always said don't tell anybody he was selling it.

I've had unprocessed milk (we used to have friends who had a diary farms); however, I prefer the milk out of a carton. There's a little bit of a taste to raw milk that I don't like.
