Just moved into my new house and the fridge was delivered yesterday. So what has been there as long as I've lived there? EVERYTHING! lol!
Generally speaking, I'm pretty good at weeding through periodically and tossing things, although condiments do tend to have a shelf life measured in years rather than days or months.
Funny story...I visited a friend with 4 kids and husband and a full time
business in St. Paul.
I emptied and cleaned her refridge one day...she had so many condiments and salad dressings.
I opened and tossed alot...one dressing she had for a long time, but
smelled ok...but it was older...I wrote a note on it...''2000, was old then, let's see'' and my name.....she emailed me 5 years later ...she found it!
They had never opened it once...kids are in college, married...still was there.
She tossed it.
Full time successful business makes her scattered.
PS I have some hot chili Korean jars that I check that have been there for years.
If I needed the space I could toss them, I guess.
Miso has been there awhile, I check it, tho.
My umbochi plums eventually got too dry...always toss one into brown rice.
Well, look around?
Anything been in there 5,8, 14, 20 years?
Yes. I keep the butter on a dish that belonged to my grandmother. It gets cleaned when a new stick of butter is opened, but it's a mainstay in the fridge.
My parents have their old refrigerator in the garage... not plugged in unless hosting for the holidays.
In the back is a bottle of "Like" and another of Mayfair "Collins Mix"
Both date from the 1960s'
In all fairness... Mom was going to get rid of them years ago... and I said I got use to seeing them there during my childhood so there they stay...
I do have a story about a home I bought from a family that was facing condemnation in a nice part of town... the entire yard and home was as bad as any hoarding show... could not walk across the rooms because everything was block solid at counter height or more.
Anyway, as I was clearing out the extra deep garage I came across a freezer... when I opened it I saw it packed with wrapped beef... mentioned it to them and they had totally forgotten they had it... the father would buy a side of beef and have it cut and wrapped... he had been gone 23 years!!!
They came and got the freezer and said the meat was still good.
You people that clean out your fridge "every six months" -- does that include mustard, ketchup, etc., too? If so, you're wasting food.
Ketchup, mustard, salad dressings, mayonnaise, etc. don't last 6 months in this house. We go through a bottle or 2 of salad dressing a week. We eat a lot of salad.

Exactly. Plus I get smaller bottles to ensure it's used up quickly.
