Might depend on the area...it seems that every couple of months I see a new variety in the store....not to mention the farmers market in season....but this is a big apple producing state.

They're usually all about eye-appeal nowadays. That's what sells best.

I've been getting some awesome Golden Delicious from Washington State lately. Crisp, almost honey-sweet - but you have to be more careful than other apples about perfect freshness, and inner rot (Walmart Produce Syndrome). I'm not a fan of very tart apples, except for making pies.

I had a nice, sweet, crisp apple at lunch, but I'm not sure what variety it was.

I know, the Fujis I picked up last week were the size of softballs! But, of course, that's when they're at their best.

I'm from CT originally, and I've always blamed it on my now living in the south, but I have to agree with Calvert.

Theres nothing to compare to a fresh picked MacIntosh or, better yet, McCoun apple. Certainly nothing I've gotten in a supermarket in the last dozen or so years comes close.

Macs & grannies are my favs. I found one store that sells the Macs (obtained from Canada) & I've been buying them since Sept. I think I got the last batch at Christmas.
I can't stand Fiji.
And I have to agree, the Gala, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, jazz, etc have been awful this past year.
