What would you have as a last meal? And would you prefer caviar or a cheeseburger, if given the choice?
If you were on death row and if you could only have ONE meal (not a banquet ) before you went to meet Ol' Sparky what would it be?
For me it would be a burger - yes a burger - cooked by the world's greatest chef and made with the greatest ingredients. The best tasting bread straight from the oven, wagyu or angus beef, some really tasty vegetables, really expensive cheese etc. Coupled with freshly deep-fried pomme frittes drizzled with aioli.
And if you were offered caviar or an ordinary cheeseburger, what would you pick?
You probably know which I'd choose. I don't even LIKE caviar .
Toss up between a great burger and fries...or a giant buffet of my mom's homecooked Indian food (all the goodies...dosas, lamb curry, samosas, papadi, etc)...
Certainly not caviar!! Crunchy little mudballs ...no..no ..no ..not for me!! If it's gotta be cheeseburger or caviar it's an easy choice! Cheeseburger,Cheeseburger,Cheeseburger!!
Between Caviar and a great Burger definitely the Burger. Served blue with melted Swiss , toasted ciabatta buns, tomato, some dijon mustard and home made mayonnaise and perhaps some mushrooms too. Served with triple cooked Fries and some home made mayonnaise to dip them in.
I don't hate Caviar, it can be nice as a little extra crunch . I had some recently with a Starter of Scallops simply put on the accompanying sauce and it was lovely.
My last meal though would go something like this - Big meal but hey it's my last one so indulge me, let's face it I am going to want a drag it as long as possible ! :
Assorted "Amuses Gueule" and Canapes
King Prawn and Scallop Tempura
Platter of seafood simply steamed ( Langoustines , Crab, Lobster ( with home made fennel or lemon mayonnaise) and Scottish Mussels)
King Scallops with Black Pudding, Pancetta , and a cauliflower puree/foam and a herb beurre blanc
Champagne Sorbet as a palate cleanser
My Step-Mother's Onion Tart with a green Walnut salad
Taleggio or Emmental Souffle
Huge platter of Sashimi
Canadian or Argentinian 28 day aged , grass fed fillet steak , served Blue, with wild mushrooms fricassee, with either a great Bearnaise sauce or a Red wine spiced poached pear sauce and accompanying vegetables ( still the best sauce I ever had, sadly only once over 15 years ago)
Cassoulet -My Great Aunt's preferably - One of the great dishes of the world.
Grapefruit sorbet as a palate cleanser
A Plate of Artisan unpasteurized cheeses with Artisan breads ( Walnut, Bacon, Guiness, Rosemary and lemon) and some artisan real Breton butter with a little sea salt , some quince jelly and truffled honey
Grand-Marnier Souffle
Home made dark chocolate truffles
A selection of nuts ( Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Cashew ,Peanuts)
And finally some fruits from my Great-Grand Mother's Orchard ( Peaches, Apricots, Nectarines, Plums , Oranges)
Spread this out over a few hours my stomach will be happy to die ! Yep it's a pretty complicated menu but it is my last meal after all.
I do have a sneaking suspicion that the prison or my captors might not be willing to put the effort in though for some reason...
No Caviar for me either.. I'd have a half pound burger, Grilled with Pepperjack cheese, Thick sliced Peppered Bacon, Fried onion, Iceburg Lettuce and a thick slice of tomato. Mayo and a touch of Catsup. A nice cone of Seasoned Fresh cut fries with a big cup of Taco Bell Nacho Cheese sauce mixed with green onions.
For Desert.. An entire NY Style Cheesecake. Cherry, Rasberry, Strawberry and plain.. in quarters.
Then I'd throw up all over the guards shoes when he came to get me...
Lobster thermadore and a gorgonzola salad. Glass of home-made sangria and slice of devil's food cake with my grandmother's frosting for dessert. Hm. Maybe I'll have that this week. Why waste a good meal for the last day of your life, when you can have it and cherish the memories a month later?
I would definitely take a burger and fries with gravy any day over caviar. However, I think my last meal would either be spaghetti with Sunday gravy or shrimp with lobster sauce, along with wonton soup with extra scallions, an egg roll, and a fortune cookie with a reprieve.
Burger for sure, with bleu, swiss & pepperjack cheese, avacado, bacon, fried egg ~~ I don't need a bun. LOL and a BUSCH beer
Then bring on the seafood ~~ steamed lobster, crab meat ~~ don't want to waste time digging it out of the legs, bacon wrapped scallops (lots), Shrimp everywhere. Louisiana boudin sausage, andouille sausage. I'd be eating ALL day as not to get stuffed too soon.
