The Food Safe course is required in BC and 'suggested" in Alberta, the province right next door. You see the difference: smokers in particular will be outside Canada's biggest donut shop sucking and putting their fingers to their mouth, and then come inside and prepare hot food.
Subway and large corporations have these food handling standards for a very good liability reason. That's why it's prepared right in front of you.
This same thing happened to me, AND it was at a Subway!! The guy in front of me paid the clerk, and sure enough he took his money, made change, and then said to me "And what can I do for you?" I said "the first thing you can do is change your gloves! You just handled money!" He looked at me like I had 3 heads, but he did it.
Another time at a small sandwich shop in the food court one of the teen age workers had her gloves on, and as she wasn't busy, she stood there playing with her hair all the while the OTHER worker, luckily for me, made MY sandwich!
As a server, I'm constantly washing my hands and/or using antibacterial gel provided to us just so this stuff doesn't happen. I'm very cautious on this.
^^^ This!!!
People eat in the car, and touch the steering wheel at the same time. How often they sanitize their steering wheel, or car keys? Or phone? I am not a germophobe. Sterile environment does not exist.
I like to feed the birds and squirrels where I live by tossing them peanuts. If I'm hungry I will eat some of the peanuts myself while feeding them. I have yet to see a bird or squirrel wearing a plastic glove and yet they seem to do ok. I don't wear a plastic glove either, and so far I have not gotten sick.

When we get to the register our gloves come off, we ring up the sale, make change, wash our hands, then put on fresh gloves. I am very anal about this. It's unfortunate that not all food servers do this. In fact I refuse to eat in any other subway except the one I work in and the other one my boss owns, because I know we take pride in how are store looks and I know the other employees at her other store and they practice the same sanitary rituals as we do.
