Best: In a Venezuelan restaurant in Queens, it was unbelievably good. Best iced coffee was in a bagel place also in Queens. In general coffee in most cute family owned bakeries in Queens/Long Island is insane
Worst: In a college cafeteria here. In general cafeteria coffee is a step above water, but one time here there was black remnants on the bottom of the cup that happens when you don't clean the damn machine properly, and the thing tasted like horse **** even after I brushed my teeth like three times.
Best ever. Traveling by train across Senegal and Mali, a 40-hour trip on hard seats, the train stops in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. There are two trains a week, and the only significant event in the lives of the villagers is to be up at 3 am when the train comes through. When it stops, the passengers get off and strand in the darkness and have coffee, a mixture of very strong coffee and sweetened condensed milk,. made on an open fire, the only light in the village. Those who can afford it make a donation, and a few tin cups get passed around -- When you finish your coffee, you pass your cup to somebody else who gets it refilled. It doesn't get any better than that.
I drink cafe du monde most mornings. But my favorite is Yuban organic roast, smooth but strong. There are others but those are the two main ones I've been drinking lately.
Worst are the light roasts, kona, blonde roast and others I can't think of the names. (Purely by taste, not that they are the worst coffees in the world)
Places?
Best:A tiny hole in the wall coffee shop in an indoor farmers market here or right on the coffee plantations deep in Jamaicans mountains in a shack.
The best was the mochas I used to get at Old Town Coffee in Eureka. When I quit drinking coffee I saved $200 a month including the tax and tip. Worst coffee, I have no recollection. Once you quit drinking coffee you don't even want to think about it, it seems so bizarre compared with tea.
Best: Dunkin donuts, McDonald's, Newman's own special blend for my Keurig,8 O'clock dark roast for Keurig, Barista Prima Columbian for Keurig and Emeril's big easy bold for Keurig.
Worst: A small luncheonette called poppy's ( closed down last year, great food terrible coffee) Instant coffee, Chock full of nuts, Hills Brothers.
