I only get sonic in the drive through, so I never even considered the possibility.
Can I just add that I'm really ****ing sick of tipping being added to new areas and the percentages going up while the sticker price doesn't go down? I also pay with a credit card in part because it removes the opportunity for people to want more donations. It is the employers job to pay them a fair wage. Introducing tipping at this point just creates an Aholes discount where the Aholes pay less and everyone else pays more to keep the wages at a reasonable level.
I know what you mean. I don't get that either. When I lived overseas, few employees expected tips. You were charged $X for Y service and that's it. It was much less complicated and workers typically had a better attitude, in my experience. There's also a fun thread about precisely that subject:

Years ago, in Bermuda, there was tipping. Then they did away with it and I feel that the service really went down. I've talked to folks that live on the island and every one of the oldtimers that I've encountered have agreed. It has drastically changed service. Bear in mind, service used to be extremely old school, putting napkins on the lap, etc.
My thought is, if there is interaction between yourself and a server.. Generally you tip.. So.. At Sonic, they're bringing the food to you (assuming you're not in the drive thru.. Never tip at a drive thru) in your car.. Generally they check back with you, see if you need anything.. So.. Small tip.
Now.. The things like Burger King is going to be doing "Table Service".. I don't see a tip there, even if they are checking up on you and bringing you refills or something.
Not sure why I see that distinction there.. Perhaps because the Sonic car hop is bringing food to you outside.. So, freezing cold, blazing hot, raining.. etc.
Moe's Southwest Grill, every one of them has a jug at the register "Gas money for the crew".. Kiss my butt.
We tip most of the time when we have change, since I use my card to pay for the meals. Even if it is a few dimes and nickles on a couple of ice creams or drinks, every penny adds up for them. My kids go there by themselves and hang out while eating since it is next door to the school where they play basketball, and we've taught them to always give a tip. They usually give the servers the coin change from the purchase. They realize it helps the servers and the servers know they are not just freeloaders hanging out there.
I agree that there seems to be new tip jars that seem to pop up everywhere. I saw one at one of those food kiosks at the mall! I think it was a pretzel place. I tip when I have a personal service. Like hair dresser, barber, spa treatment, nails, restaurants, bars, and sonic if I don't do the drive thru. I don't consider ordering at a counter and receiving it at the counter to be personal service. How about starbucks? Anyone tip all the time at SB?

There are several fast food chains such as DQ and Culvers where you order at the counter, then they give you a number to take to your table. The "server" then brings you your food. There is also another person that walks around sometimes and asks if you need anything else.

Should you tip them like a Sonic server?
I'm not familiar with Culvers.. Never been to one.. DQ was my first 'real' job back in the late 80's.. And I never expected tips.. We didn't do table service, though.
I lean towards no on that.. Because who are you tipping at that point? I think table service, perhaps the defining moment there is who cleans up your table? Do you take your trash to the trashcan? If so, no tip.
Again, i'm not saying my reasoning is logical here..

Aren't they on roller skates at Sonic? I'd tip just for that alone.
I don't tip any fast food. Maybe I'm just jaded after working at McD's and Schlotzsky's back in college and no one tips. Not to mention floral delivery (drive all over town to deliver flowers with a smile, while making sure not to crush/tip them while driving) without a single tip. Yeah, yeah... you didn't order them.. but you don't have a buck or two for bringing you joy?
There are so many other areas that provide "service" that don't receive tips.. it really makes me question which ones get chosen. Girls getting their hair cut and styled for example... vs the "good" computer guy that comes out to clean up your virus-infected PC (vs. a GeekSquad type of repairman)?
