I'm not sure if it's rude but it's definitely different. I used to dip french fries in frosties in high school but I may have smoked something first
I always dipped fries in a Frosty from Wendy's and I never "smoked" anything but a regular cigarette first.
Original Poster: Being one who feeds more than herself and her husband, I would not be happy if you "plunked" your dessert in the middle of the main course that was served.
It is like the one time I made a very delicious but expensive pasta dish and one of our guests drowned it in catsup.
It's one of those various things that we Americans can be so dang ethnocentric about. I'm as guilty as the next person.
When I was a kid I could not ever mix my green peas with the mashed potatoes on my plate. I thought it looked horrible. I couldn't combine the food until one day my father said to me "It all ends up in the same place" and from that time I would mix.
im going to try this- this spring/summer we get invited to many dinner parties..
show up with a cookie dough blizzard../ plate full of chocolate chip cookies,,hand them out to the kids..
put them on the dinner table,,,,whip out the whip cream....and put that on anything the host cooked
ill get this on video....and share it...
this is engenius, this will finally get me off the invite lists for the obligatory gifts..
To clarify ad nauseam, I usually eat the dessert along with the food, not mixed with it... I was asking about this practice in my original post, but I apparently did not make that clear at all. Again, (and again and again) sorry for any confusion.
I posted this because some of you who are responding appear to have only read the original post. (This is why I wish City Data allowed us to go back and edit our original posts on the forums. It's kind of silly that they don't. I know that a lot of people don't read every post in a thread before commenting.)
Depends on the dessert. For me, candied yams are a dessert, but they're served as a vegetable with the meal. I happily included it on my dinner plate with the turkey and stuffing and alternate bites from one to the other.
Hot fudge sundaes - those are decisively dessert, and should be exclusively so because otherwise you ruin the experience. On the other hand - a soft-serve Dairy Queen cone and a hotdog definitely can be eaten in the same short window of time, though one should always expect that they will finish the dog before getting halfway through the cone, and plan their napkin acquisition accordingly.
It's rude if you think your view point is the only point in the room that demands respect. If someone wants to eat dessert eat dessert, life is too short for narrow points of view (AKA control). I respect your freedom to choose, so why not respect mine?
Dessert does not show up until after dinner has been eaten, dishes cleared, etc.

If you want to do it in private you can do it.
In public I would suggest that you stop doing that.
I agree with the other posters. In my house and basically every other house where I have eaten dessert is served after everyone has finished their main meal.
Even in a restaurant, the waiter does not even take your dessert requests until after diners are almost finished with their entree and brings the dessert when they are finished eating their main meal.

I know. I forgot to tell the waiter that I wanted my dessert with my meal once and got upset with the waiter when my dessert did not show up with my main course. I totally forgot that dessert after the meal was the usual rule that people follow. I've untrained myself pretty well, I guess. Now, maybe it's time to retrain.
Another variation is having the dessert before the meal, because sweet flavors increase appetite. Has anyone tried this?

Sweet flavors do not increase my appetite. They make me feel full which is why I will order dessert first (as I already said in my last reply). Why stuff myself with dinner first, just so I can have the dessert, which is what I really wanted anyways?
I wonder how many people were told by their parents that they had to eat all of their dinner or they would not get dessert.
