There is alot of controversy with bottled water, cities trying to ban it, bacteria issues, etc.
I cook with tap water, bathe in it & brush my teeth with the local stuff, but as for drinking it, no way.
I hate the taste & knowing how much water is recycled, especially here in Arizona, it just makes me feel safer with my "fresh spring water!"
But I've read that states are actually encouraging their citizens to drink from the tap & to give up the bottle.
Besides the plastic & recylcing issue, what's the big deal?
And as far as recycling, when is the 'mandatory recycling' law going to be passed??
I do the same as you do, tap for everything except drinking. It is just a taste issue for me, I just prefer my Poland Springs water.
I live in ME, where we have the 5 cent bottle return, so it seems to encourage recycling. I don't know about the mandatory recycling law, but the town I live in requires everyone to buy the special city trashbags ($6.25 for 5, 15g. bags) or your trash will not be collected. It is in an effort to encourage recycling and raise money for the landfill. So far, it seems to be working, but I also wonder how much illegal dumping it encourages.
I love Poland Springs water. Fortunately, my tap water tastes almost as good, so that's what I mostly drink.
I got a water bulletin in the mail last year concerning the local water.
Levels of arsenic were traced in the water, higher levels that whatever the standard should be.
And fecal matter....ok, that's just toooooo much for me.
I've looked for statistics on matters found in bottled water & haven't come across anything yet.
Other than that bacteria that has made a few people sick.
Here in MN there is no reason to drink bottled water as our drinking tastes as good as any bottled water, but some people still insist on bottled. BIG waste of money.
The tap water here has so much chlorine in it that it almost smells like swimming pool water. We also have fecal choloforms and other yummy sounding things in our water. I will bathe in it, but I used bottled to cook, drink, and brush teeth.
So what is everyone thinking: the plastic from these bottles is going to vanish? Think again!
I personally don't think that at all. I buy my water in the big 2 gallon containers, and refill a jug I carry with me. We live in a very old house, and the water leaves a pretty strong after taste. If our house wasn't currently for sale, we would install a filter and would drink tap. In the mean time, I will stick to bottled and to recycling. As I mentioned in my post, we have a good bottle/can redemption program here in Maine, it can be a pain, but we do it.
I have the best tap water on the planet and that's a fact. It tastes good too.
It comes out of the Twin Lakes in Colorado near Mt. Elbert. Mmm mmm good.

I was drinking the water straight from the springs, it tasted SO good.
My dad made me stop, said I would regret it later
I was only 8 or 9 then, but I do most definately remember those springs & the way I felt, so good to drink straight from them.
I don't remember regretting it, either...
