I buy it from the bulk bins. That way I can pick only the fresh ones. Luckily there are about 4 chains of stores close to me that offers this. If I had to choose a packaged, I get the whole brown ones or the wild mushroom mix.

Usually sliced. They're priced the same where I shop whether whole or sliced, and I used them immediately.

I am kind of spoiled.

When I lived in Chicagoland, there was a great mushroom farm immediately east of Lake Geneva, WI. They grew their own mushrooms and they were fresh and yes, CRUNCHY. Since then, I have found MOST mushrooms in the supermarkets to be not very fresh.

I have always purchased whole unpackaged/prepared mushrooms. There is no way that I would be able to use all of the packaged mushrooms before they spoiled unless I was preparing a recipe that called for a heck of a lot of mushrooms like mushroom soup, mushroom ..., etc.

I have 4 right now in the refrigerator that should be used soon. Looks like a quiche may be in order this weekend.

I buy whole. I like mine sliced thinner than how they come in packages.

I buy whole as a rule and very, very few times have I ever bought sliced. I find that whole keep MUCH longer than sliced. And I also like slicing/chopping my own because sometimes I want them thicker than the ones you buy sliced or I may want them chopped instead of sliced or I might want whole mushrooms for whatever I am making.

And sometimes there is a price difference and sometimes not.

And I do also rinse or briefly soak my mushrooms (I mostly use button mushrooms) very quickly right before use. Then I towel dry them immediately. I never wash them any earlier than right before I use them because they soak up too much of the water while sitting in fridge and spoil quicker.
