I try to eat at places that are not chains.. I try to go local when out of town..

There was a place in.. Where was that.. Louisiana.. Lake Charles.. that was it.. A local seafood specializing restaurants that got me eating fish again, after about 15 years.. Reason I didn't eat fish for so long was because I got bad fish at a Po Folks (For those who remember them) and I just wouldn't eat fish from a restaurant.. No sick like a seafood sick.

I also ate at a few local restaurants in West Palm Beach, FL that were memorable for the food... Not so much for their names.. Good seafood.

One of the best burgers I have ever had was at a hotel restaurant.. It was the restaurant in a Best Western in Dubuque, IA.. Of course, I felt lucky to be eating anything, because landing at the Dubuque airport, the pilot blew the landing TWICE and I swear knocked the tops off stalks of corn on the third attempt.

A memorable place that I remember the name of.. A few years back I visited my dad in Des Moines, IA.. Flew into Kansas City and drove up.. And a restaurant off the interstate there named "Toot Toot" was quite good.

I'm looking for things I can't get at home.. You'll never catch me in a McDonalds or other chain restaurant when out of town.. The exception.. I plan to try In and Out Burger when I go to Vegas this summer.. Don't have those around here and I want to see what the fuss is all about.

They always start off with good intentions and healthy road snacks. Good choices if we stop at a restaurant. The trip back is a whole other story.....

Default Wouldn't be a vacation without a FEW treats...

Still healthy (salads, lean meats, finger veggies, etc) but with a few treats (smores with the nieces/nephews, birthday ice-cream sandwiches, so forth). The trips we've taken and had a "eat-whatever's around" attitude, like at stadiums, etc -- someone in the family ends up either with diarrhea during the trip or with a compromised immune system/illness upon returning home...NOT worth it. We actually increase our Vitamin intake KNOWING full-well that we'll be exposed to more school-aged kids and more environmental challenges than normal for us!

Car-travel foods typical for our family: trailmix, nuts, non-messy fruits (apples, clementines, bananas, grapes). If our travel plans mean we have dinner on the road that usually means GPSing a Wendys for their Apple Pecan Chicken Salad OR a Costco for their inexpensive Chicken Caesar Salads!!

We pack pre-made sandwiches of Turkey or ham and cheese in the cooler and leave it easily to access from the front passenger seat, so the passenger can just reach back and grab a sandwich and we don't have to stop. But apple, carrot, celery slices can be pre-packed also for ease of eating on the road. The healthier cereal bars get packed to.

MOH {My Other Half} typically snacks on chips or other at night anyway{not the best, I know}, so a bag or two gets packed.
I take deli meat {again not exactly the best}, a loaf of bread, the condiments we like and camping silverware along to make some for the return trip home. I make a new batch of sammies at the hotel for the trip home.

While there, we eat at low or middle priced restaurants, choosing a restaurant and something to eat we are likely to not get at home. I choose hotels that have mini fridge and microwaves as I don't typically finish all the restaurant serves me, so I have a "snack" for later too. I remember to take microwavable disposable plates with me!!!

We take our own 4 cup coffee maker and ground coffee and sugar with us, as we saw a news report on how the hotel cleaners will use the same rag they wipe the toilet/tub with to wipe down/out the coffee maker they supply. It is small and of little inconvenience to take our own along. Plus we are very early risesr who want coffee at 3 or 4 am along with a breakfast bar, and the hotel breakfast bar is not usually set up at that time.

Otherwise, our diet is not really changed,

I eat like crazy.

Anything I want!

I just go hog wild on vacations. Loads of seafood in seafood areas. Mexican food in the Southwest. BBQ plates piled high on the way out of Texas. Lots of greasy fast food if no local dives are to be had.

Good point about the coffee. I'm a little grossed out now I will also have to remember to bring my own cream and sugar. Hotels supply these teeny tiny packs of cream and sugar that's not enough for even one cup. Who wants to go down to the front desk at 5 in the morning when they're barely oriented to where they woke up? not me. I like to sleepily sip my over-creamed and sugared coffee in the morning in my hotel bed and watch t.v. before I get up and around.

This is the way to enjoy a vacation. I would need some fiber tablets after all that though.

It also depends on who I go with. If the people I go with aren't healthy to begin with, there will be a lot of stops at fast food restaurants, lots of cokes, potato chips and cookies. I kind of give in to peer pressure, and the first day of road trips, junk tastes really really good.

Do your eating habits change, or do you stay pretty consistent on a trip (Depending on your food habits)?
I stay consistent. I pack my lunch / food in advance.
