I use canning jars to keep most thing fresh. Like celery, some cheeses, etc. Is there anything better. I thought I heard a long time ago that there was a container that you could get all the air out of as it was being sealed. But I haven't heard anything like that for a long time.

I LOVE my Food Saver! I use it for everything! Freezing, mainly...but for dry items (that don't spoil) it's a good way to keep the "freshness" in....like coffee grounds, or brown sugar...stuff like that.

Now, canning REALLY preserves food...but you have to CAN it...you can't just put stuff in the jar and expect it to "keep"!

It's a lot of work, so it's more for long-term storage.

I am very confused. Why in the world would you use Ball canning jars for food storage? They're for - well - canning. See other posts. To store celery, trim the ends and dry off and wrap very tightly in aluminum foil. To store blocks of cheese I wrap them tightly in Glad Press n Seal. Or use zip lock bags. Most stuff goes in Rubbermaid food storage containers.

It seems that bell canning jars would keep things fresher longer. I guess I am wrong then.

Yeah....they are better than nothing but as others have said....they are for canning.

If you are worried about freashnesd..get a vacuum sealer.

I use them for storing things like almond meal or yeast, and I guess you could store leftovers in them, but I don't think there'd be much advantage to storing produce in them.

They probably look pretty nice in the fridge though.
