Today I went for dim sum and because I was with a medium sized group, we got put at a table with a Chinese man and his two young sons. He was eating congealed pig's blood and then told us that most Americans don't like it. :P So he offered it to us. This meant it was a challenge and I'm always up for it. It tasted like liver flavored tofu. I was surprised- the kids were about 8 and 7 and they were munching it down like it was candy!
Scrapple- A savory mush of a hog's head, heart, liver, and other scraps? which are boiled to a broth and cornmeal is added, with seasonings sage, thyme, among others then is cast into loaves and allowed to cool until gelled. That sounds simply delicious don't you agree?
Strangest thing I ever ate was spicy pickled jellyfish. Of course, at the time I ate it I didn't know what it was, because the young woman that offered it to me didn't know the English word for it. She told me the Vietnamese name (which I don't recall anymore) and I later asked a friend of mine who spoke both Vietnamese and English what it meant. She looked at me oddly, said "Oh, you didn't EAT that did you?!" LOL
I said yes, and she kind of shuddered and said "Even *I* don't eat that stuff...it's pickled jellyfish and it's disgusting!" Which it rather was, but I didn't want to hurt the feelings of the young woman that shared it with me because she obviously thought it was some prized delicacy.
