I had a weird thing happen Saturday. I got everything out to make bloody marys and when I tried to open the cap on the previously opened tomato juice plastic jar, it hissed like I was opening a carbonated beverage, and then erupted like a volcano! I had tomato juice EVERYWHERE!! I just used it a month ago when I took it on a boating weekend. I smelled and then tasted it, and it was as if the vodka was already in it!
I checked the date on it, and it said September 2016, so that can't be it's problem. I saw no mold in it, and it didn't smell moldy, it just smelled fermented! What the heck happened to my tomato juice? It was in the fridge or in the cooler while we were on our trip, and in the fridge since then. I've never seen such a thing.

Hopefully you now realize that you should always use an opened bottle of juice within a week, as it will spoil & be unfit to consume. Right?

Ummmm ... the 'use by' date assumes that it is left sealed, unopened. Once you open it, the quality starts to degrade, and it starts fermenting.

So just because it says it's good until September 2016, that doesn't mean you can open it today, and it will remain good for 14 months.

Sounds like your can missed a part of the canning process at the canning plant and ended up fermenting.

The OP says it had been opened a month ago--it was fermented--because it was opened a month ago.

I definitely wouldn't drink tomato juice that's been open for a month.

I've noticed that sometimes tomato-based salsas will have a "fizzy" aspect. I've always assumed that it's starting to ferment or doing something that signifies it's on its last legs.

So, mrs.cool, what happened next (after cleanup, lol)? Did you have a spare bottle of juice? Did you make a run to the store? What happened with the Bloody Mary's? (By the way, I like mine a little spicy. *hint hint*)

Lucky you aren't getting sick all the time if you do this type of food handling.
