I was watching Charmed('s) "Ms. Hellfire" tonight for a few minutes as I ate my salad before work. In the teaser, Phoebe is there, eating breakfast, all relaxed and I was thinking, "Gee, it would be nice to be relaxed like that......gee, it would be nice to be able to have breakfast like that".....since my meals have turned into either lunch or dinner.

Then it occurred to me that for many in the 1st world, meals consist of something like a breakfast around 0700, lunch around noon, dinner around 1700, and then a few hours before going to bed. Not all, mind your, but for many.........

....................and with my mixed up, graveyard schedule, I don't think I've seen anything like that for years, if decades.

Meals get pushed to the extremes of their time limits and often compressed down to two or one a day. "Lunch" is often the greatest lost since my shift is a straight 8 hour one and if I do grab lunch, which is not often, it is eating out of a spaghetti can......but my choice, right?

But is this a feature of the adult, probably single, working life? The popular concept of meals disappear?

There is often one upside about my dining life. On days where there is time, "dinner" the final meal of a waking day, usually starts 1-3 hours before meal time as a long simmering stew. At times, I feel guilty making dinner so early but that type of cooking is a pleasure to me.

Our family tends to adhere to a classic schedule. Breakfast at 6:30a.m., lunch at noon, dinner at 6:00-6:30.

Sometimes dinner gets pushed up or back depending on schedules, but for the most part it's 6-6:30. And we all sit at the table, food is on the table in serving dishes and we generally take about 45 minutes to an hour to eat and converse.

We used to have dinner around 7 p.m., but since this school year started we've been shooting for 5:30 instead. Our son started junior high and has to leave the house earlier (and walk to school instead of being driven), and he was dragging butt in the morning. He is also approaching puberty and growing like a weed, so we want him to have a lot more sleep. He was not pleased about going to bed at 7:30 (he's 11), but he gets to lie in bed with a book for a while, and he is much more chipper in the morning now. It's also more conducive to having quiet time with just my husband and me in the evenings.

Breakfast around 10:30 - 11:00am , no lunch, dinner around 6:30-7:00pm But we are retired so not tied to a "work" determined schedule. Highly recommend the freedom of retirement and lack of actual schedules.

We are retired. The only planned schedule for us is a cocktail (one for her, two for me) at 5pm and dinner around 7PM. Her to bed about 9-10pm, me about 10-11pm. Our schedules, moods, appetites control the rest of our daily eating.

Our schedule changes every three months and our meal times change then also. Right now, those of us who eat breakfast are eating it at 1pm, lunch at 6pm and dinner at 11:30 pm. Personally, I don't eat breakfast because I am always nauseated when I wake up. I may eat lunch at 6pm and a piece of fruit after my bike ride.

If you want a stew or something that is improved with a long cooking time, why not get a crock pot and put the food in before you go to work? That way when you get home, your house will be full of the aroma of dinner and you'll be happy knowing you don't have to cook after a long day of work. Plus, there will be leftovers and you could probably have a couple days of lunches for work from the leftovers. You'll get to an age where eating canned spaghetti doesn't agree with your digestive system, probably.

We eat breakfast between 8-9, lunch around 1ish and dinner 7ish. When the kids were younger, all the meals were about 2 hours earlier.

I'm very strict about the regularity of my meals, as a deterrent to snacking all the time. My body tells me when I need food. Breakfast is whenever I get up in the morning, which can be anywhere from 5 to 8. Coffee and a small pastry at the rental office when I check my mail at 9:30. Very small lunch at 12.00. Main meal at 6.00. A couple of snacks after supper, cheese and crackers maybe at 8.00 and yogurt or a smoothie near bedtime.

Traveling, I'm mostly in the third world, where things start out very late Nearly impossible to get coffee or anything else before 9.
