Bought a coconut (husked already) the other day and last night decided to bite the bullet and open it up.

Previously I had read several internet sites directions regarding dealing with a coconut.

I drained the water first (through the soft eye).

Then I took the coconut in my hand and smacked it with the blunt side of a small, heavy cleaver. It cracked into two large 'halves'. Then I broke the halves up into smaller pieces.

Next I pried the meat from the shell with a butter knife.

Finally I peeled the dark part from the white meat with a vegetable peeler. Drank the water and been eating the meat.

Last time I did this was when I was about 10 and my dad did the work.

Love it! That is what coconut is supposed to taste like. Not an almond joy or mounds bar.

Mike

Love fresh coconut. We have a very generous tree in our yard which grows huge coconuts and my husband loves to get his machete out and whack them open. I'm not very good yet at prying the meat out without wounding myself! Good idea with the vegetable peeler, have to give that a try.

We have two coconut palms in our FL home back yard. We have been harvesting them for the water but not opened any up...

Your description makes me want to go get a few Seafood.
Love the milk more than the flesh, but it is good when fresh and sliced thinly. Yumm.

Coconut milk is made by grating the coconut meat and extracting the liquid. Coconut water is the clear liquid inside a coconut.
