I was just wondering if there was anyone out there like me. Im a male with a sweet tooth. Like tonight at dinner with some new acquaintences I begrudgingly sipped on the wine offered but much more enjoyed the soda that was being served for the children. The host looked at me like I was a space alien for not wanting the wine. With alcohol I tend to hate most beers unless I am incredibly thirsty then I will crave a light beer. I hate most wines except for dessert wines. I love wine coolers such as Seagrams and prefer hard liquor to beer.

I enjoy chocolates, ice cream, pastries, etc. Dont get me wrong I also love meats and bacon and savory foods like most guys, but somehow feel out of step somehow from the general population in preferring sweet tastes. When push comes to shove I love sodas but will drink diet or water or teas but cannot stand bitter drinks. Again it varies. As I said I will crave a light beer if Im super thirsty but will trade that in for a soda any day.

Yet I feel "scolded" for this in that somehow my taste is "girly", typical " American", or "not sophisticated". Does anyone else with a sweet tooth feel the same?

You like what you like, man. Own it. That's manly. It is true though that around the world in all cultures women and children are known to have a sweeter palettes than men. There must be some basis in biology for this. So what? Women wear a lot more pink than men in the US, but that doesn't mean a man can't rock it. Eat the chocolate, chug the soda, double up on the cheese cake. If you're teased for not being manly enough for liking what you like laugh it off and pop another sweet.

I'm a guy and don't care what people think about my likes or dislikes. Have you tried a rose' or white zinfandel wine, it's sweeter than white or red. I prefer soda with all my meals, but I had a friend who liked wine with dinner so I found that pinot grigio for white is less dry and shiraz for red is less dry.

Wine wise, you might like Lambrusco - it's sweet and I love it!

As for being a guy with a sweet tooth, I'd easily say most of the guys I know do as well - and their sweet tooth's far surpass my women friend's.

You sound disturbingly like a totally normal dude to me!!

Do you really think you're uncommon, that most people don't prefer sweet to bitter?

Dude, open your eyes. 95% of people prefer sweet, we're just adults who recognise you can't eat only sweet food or we'll get diabetes.

As far as 'manly' non-bitter drinks, you could pretend you got breathalysed and were really given a stiff talking to, or saw some awful accident and you won't drink anything if you're going to be driving. If you're at a bar, experiment with mixed drinks, like bourbon and coke. With wine, go for unoaked whites, like sauvignon blanc, or soarkling wines.

Why would you drink wine if that's not what you want? Just because it's offered, that doesn't mean that you have to accept it. And requesting a coke will not make you "less manly."

My father is 79 years old and has never drank alcohol or coffee. No moral objections; he just doesn't like the stuff. He drinks Coke. Full stop. He's even been known to bring his own Coke when he's not sure if it will be available.

If you like Coke, drink Coke. Who cares what anyone thinks?

Lol I think more people than you think (both genders) don't actually LIKE bitter, harsh tasting foods. They just convinced themselves to tolerate it enough to put on a show that they have such 'sophisticated' palates. They're bs'ing themselves as much as they're bs'ing their dinner companions.

I can tell you, I work in an office of all guys, and someone brought down bottled coffee drinks. Some bottles were of straight black coffee (Blue Bottle I think it was), some were of sugary frappuccino type drinks.

The frappuccinos all disappeared before anyone touched the black coffee. The truth had come out! Haha

And then my husband makes me order girly drinks when we're out, so that he can save face. That's actually pretty common, from what I've heard.

the constant pounding of the health food Nazi's thru the years,,

you mention certain foods and its connected to X

regular soda???? (gasp) how dare you will all that sugar!!!
now we cant even drink diet soda,,,because that's been shamed and guilted..

we had a food shamer at our thanksgiving meal,,, the poor kid was almost in tears,,,couldn't have a slice of pumpkin pie,,
so, I sliced some pumpkin pie and gave it to the kid,, (wasn't even her kid) and no the kid wasn't obese or diabetic or allergic to pumpkin... she just thought she knew better
