This is a hard one! I tend to think like Maine here, when I think American I think regional foods.
So my list would be things like
Fried clams
Steamers
Lobsters
Shrimp and grits
Crabcakes
Pulled pork
BBQ brisket
Shoyu chicken
Pit beef
Po boys
Etc.....you get where I'm going with this!

I think the list could be a mile long if we listed everything that comes to mind as being "classic American" but certainly the top 10 would be:

Burgers
mac and cheese
fried chicken and mashed potatoes
grits
apple pie
fries
hot dogs
bbq
cat fish
philly cheese sandwiches

Notice most of what comes to my mind as "classic American" really isn't all the healthy, but boy does it taste good!!!!

This made me laugh! True, I've never seen anyone outside the U.S. consume a Fluffernutter. In fact, I've never seen anyone outside New England eat one except my neighbor who grew up in Boston.

Here are a few more from me:

Monte Cristo Sandwich
Spam
Scrapple
Ice cream in a cone
