This is a hard one! I tend to think like Maine here, when I think American I think regional foods.
So my list would be things like
Fried clams
Steamers
Lobsters
Shrimp and grits
Crabcakes
Pulled pork
BBQ brisket
Shoyu chicken
Pit beef
Po boys
Etc.....you get where I'm going with this!
Navy beans n ham, chili, cornbread, BBQ anything, bacon (should be its own food group), hot wings, spuds done any style, but tater skins are very American.
BBQ meats (ribs & chicken)
Fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy
Baked beans (also called pork & beans in some parts of the country)
Buffalo wings
Hot dogs
Reuben sandwiches
BLT sandwiches
Wedge salads
Cornbread
Grits
Clam chowder
Macaroni & cheese
Pumpkin pie
Sweet potato pie
Pecan pie
Key lime pie
Brownies
Blondies
This made me laugh! True, I've never seen anyone outside the U.S. consume a Fluffernutter. In fact, I've never seen anyone outside New England eat one except my neighbor who grew up in Boston.
Here are a few more from me:
Monte Cristo Sandwich
Spam
Scrapple
Ice cream in a cone
