While I don't put ketchup on a hot dog, I have no objection to putting chopped tomato, and other toppings on it. Tomatoes are not exactly the same as Ketchup.
I've never liked ketchup on hot dogs or hamburgers and assumed that these were just used to appeal to children who like their food sweet. I've never actually been much of a hot dog fan anyway but this recently changed when I visited Chicago and my tourist trolley stop was next to a Portillo's. So at age 60, I discovered the real deal Chicago style hot dog with a beef Vienna dog, mustard, relish, chopped grilled or steamed onions, chopped tomatoes, a pickle wedge, a couple of sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt on a bun. The sweet pickle relish is a special type that is much less sweet than what you typically buy in the store. It was delicious!
That's me too. As a kid, I put ketchup on hot dogs. I don't think this is a moral issue, but, really ketchup sort of kills the flavor of a good hot dog. If you have cheap hot dogs, put whatever on there because you have little taste to kill anyway. Lot of difference between a purely white bun and a cheap dog, and a really good bun with a Polish or German style dog on it.
But I am now a confirmed "mustard, onion, maybe cream cheese" kind of guy.
But if you want ketchup on yours, hey, it's a free country.
But WHY, for heaven's sake? Chili, which has tomatoes in it is fine, but ketchup, which has tomatoes in it is wrong? If I want to put sawdust on my hot dog, I'll do it. And I'll say it doesn't taste that different from a corn dog.
