I am making a childhood staple comfort food, New England boiled dinner. My version is I take a smoked shoulder put it in a large pot and cover with water. I throw in a couple bay leaves, four or so cloves of garlic and a few peppercorns. Boil it up for an hour or so. Add carrots, onions and turnips. In a little bit add potatoes and later add cabbage. Keep cooking until the vegetables are as tender as you prefer. Drain the whole mess and serve. Sometimes I splash apple cider vinegar over my plate. Sometimes I eat with a brown mustard.
