Tonight was a treat meal Spicy Peanut Box from Noodlebox (Creamy Indonesian peanut sauce with coconut milk, simmered with ribbon noodles, tofu, Asian greens, sprouts, peppers, cilantro. Topped with roasted peanuts). So delicious! And a ginger ale.

Yesterday turned into Sugo, pasta and salad.

Thick pork chops off the grill, fresh green beans (SO is already moaning), steak fries, maybe mini pecan pies.

I am making a childhood staple comfort food, New England boiled dinner. My version is I take a smoked shoulder put it in a large pot and cover with water. I throw in a couple bay leaves, four or so cloves of garlic and a few peppercorns. Boil it up for an hour or so. Add carrots, onions and turnips. In a little bit add potatoes and later add cabbage. Keep cooking until the vegetables are as tender as you prefer. Drain the whole mess and serve. Sometimes I splash apple cider vinegar over my plate. Sometimes I eat with a brown mustard.

I just saw Martha Stewart on TV this morning, and she must have mentioned cabbage rolls. So I’m making her mother (Big Martha’s) recipe. The sauce is tomato purée and cabbage water. There’s a chopped apple on top. They cook them on the stove, but mine are in the oven.

Cabbage rolls are like meatloaf, in that I never make them the same way twice, and I’m still trying to nail the perfect recipe.
