My Mom used to save all her bacon fat in a tin soup can, refrigerate it, and then throw the whole thing away. It seemed like a waste to me, but at least it didn't clog the drain. If I cooked bacon, I would save the fat and then spread the chilled fat on pine cones and then coat them in the small birdseed to make treats for the birds. Woodpeckers particularly like them.
Not now, but I used to save it all the time. I refrigerated it until I had a whole coffee can full, then I used it to make soap. It makes the absolute best laundry soap.
We rarely have bacon and when we do have the bacon it is not used for breakfast.
I cook the bacon, toss in onions and steamed brussels sprouts or steamed asparagus and warm it through.
After that the bacon fat cannot be used for anything else in my opinion.
I have been roasting my brussels with bacon! Cut the brussels in half, toss with chili flakes, a little bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and chili flakes. Then thinly slice a slice of bacon or two and sprinkle around the brussels. Roast at 350-375 for around 30 minutes and you have awesome brussel sprouts?
Yup. I put it in a small bowl, cover it and put it in the fridge. Sometimes I'll use it for something before throwing it away, sometimes not.
One of my favorite kitchen memories from my childhood is the aluminum grease canister perched on top of the stove under the wall clock with the fat chef holding his belly.
Yes, and also beef tallow and chicken shmaltz. I run it through a fine mesh tea strainer. It adds so much flavor to anything pan fried, also in soups, casseroles, gravy and sauces. A little goes a long way, I tastes so much better than vegetable oils.
If you really want to spoil your canine, take about a teaspoon and coat their food with it. Dogs go absolutely bonkers over the taste. It's proven they will love you even more! A little bit won't hurt 'em.
