Looks fun! I don't think I can grow lettuce in this climate after Spring though. It gets very hot.
I planted three heads of lettuce this year and have had more salad than I can eat, but I think the season will be over soon.
Yes, I have had garden lettuce for several months now but it's all going to seed, and there is no point in planting more at this time of the year.
I still think it's strange that lettuce has been scarce in some parts of the country. As I mentioned, I'm in Southern California, and there has been no shortage of lettuce, nor high lettuce prices, either in the grocery stores or the farmer's market. Typically, if there's a national shortage, it's reflected here too.
I went to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner this evening. Since they had no romaine and litte iceberg, they had all of the specialty lettuces in the salad. That was a MAJOR improvement over their usual selection.
Every single Sweet Tomatoes here closed last October. Sniff. #poursoutladleofdressingformyhomies
Yeah, in fall of last year, their parent company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and they scaled back to I guess around 100 restaurants, total, to attempt to dig out of $175 million in debt.
O believe this depends on where you get your information. I majored in Nutrition so have a little bit of background. The only real value, as we were taught in iceberg lettuce is the fiber; very little other food value: if you think 2 cups providing a third of the suggested daily allowance, think of how much you would have to eat to get all the daily allowance. 2 cups is a lot of lettuce unless you are a rabbit or guinea pig. I will add, there are studies that indicate iceberg lettuces does have a lot of vit but we have to consider where the reports come from.
You don't buy iceberg lettuce for the vitamins, you buy it for the texture and flavor. Leaf lettuce does not have the crunch. There are no substitutes. There is more to food than vitamins and fiber.

As a kid, iceberg was pretty much the only lettuce available to us. Not a lot of imported greens in general and certainly not where I lived. Iceberg is what I grew up on in terms of salad. Always seemed a bit boring to me.
I was astounded the first time I heard of the dish served in some nicer restaurants called Iceberg Wedge Salad!
