I'm a fourth generation restaurateur and I've never seen this in all my years in the biz. Could this possibly be a regional thing? I've been involved with hundreds of restaurants through the years.

I agree, but I don't think once in awhile it will hurt the kids to indulge in total crap. As for myself I wouldn't think of ordering a kids meal. First of all, unlike what someone else mentioned I do not think the meal are big at all. We do volunteer work with kids at one of our local elementary schools. Last Friday was the last day or school so we took our 3 kids (kids we have worked with all year) kids meals for lunch as a surprise To our shock, all 1st graders and they are every bite.

I do agree with those who say the kids meals are bland. My theory is if you can't eat an adult meal, you either order from the $1 menu (fast food) or just order an appetizer. the other option, which we usually do, bring home the left over, but please don't order off a kids menu, even if it is allowed. There is a reason it is called a kids menu.

It happens all the time in institutional food service (hospital, business, and college cafeterias) as well as concession stands around the country.

It happens at McDonald's where they precook the meat and put it into a warmer prior to assembly.

If grilled chicken is something they have on the menu, it doesn't hurt to ask if that is something they can do. You wouldn't be the first to ask.
Yeah, I guess I could do that or at least try. It's funny, I'm a somewhat picky eater and I have no problem with ordering something and requesting it be customized for me meaning leaving off the ingredients that I don't like - I only do this for things where I know that can be done, or getting a sauce on the side or swapping out swiss cheese for cheddar, etc.

But I'm less comfortable with ordering something that isn't on the menu at all, even if they have the various components. The last time I tried to do that, they said no! It was an Italian restaurant, and I asked if I could get an entree with 1/2 chicken and 1/2 eggplant - they had the full sized versions of each on the menu, but I was hoping to try both. They said no because they had only prepped full sized versions and they'd be left with half portions that no one else would think to order since they didn't offer half portions on the menu.

Given the very small servings that predominate in almost all restaurants (including the tiny dessert servings), how can there be any leftovers? I am 73 and I eat less than I used to, but the servings are still too small for me. I am approximately normal weight for my height (6' 1" and 185 pounds). How do you people fuel your expenditures of energy? Are you total couch potatoes?

I just hate ordering what is supposed to be a normal meal and leaving the restaurant hungry. The alternative (if it's not a buffet) is to order two meals, such as ordering a full salad in addition, and that gets pricey. The full salads, which are supposed to be a meal, usually run about $10.

I suppose a lot has to do with one's level of physical activity. Mine isn't what it ought to be, but I do remain physically active.

Wow. It must be different in L.A. Servings have been GIGANTIC everywhere I've ever lived. Including Orange County. I have to take 2/3 of it home every time. I'm normal size and my activity level makes no difference.

Good for you being able to metabolize such a big amount of food at 73! That's amazing.

I used to work in a restaurant and really hated it when adults ordered kids menu. And just water to drink. Now I'm on the other side of the fence, not wanting to order much at all. I make up for it with a cocktail or 2.

I understood that as an adult, you are ordering kids to tell ''meals''. When English is your foreign language, these misunderstandings are quite normal.

I have been all over California and all over the United States. No difference. Serving sizes are inadequate.

Not usually, but theres a Hawaiian place with really big servings and I noticed their kids meals are practically the same size, so thinking about getting one to go next time we go in to eat.... (for later)...

(O and the kids meals are the same entree - like Korean BBQ ribs- with maybe one less side, but one side of mac and cheese is enough!)...
