has anyone made it on the grill? I bought some frozen for my DH. There's a recipe on the back for grilling them. I plan to make it tomorrow weather permitting.

I haven't at home, but late husband and I used to go to a Korean BBQ place when we still lived in CA that had individual flame grills at each table, you picked out raw ingredients from a buffet kind of thing and cooked it yourself. It was really fun, they had octopus and I recall it being delicious grilled.

Never ate it grilled. Best I ever had was when caught fresh while I was commercial fishing in Alaska, I cut it up and ate it raw, very tasty. Otherwise, I used it seafood chowder, I worked on a shrimp trawl so seafood was on the menu daily and chowder was in my repertoire. I expect grilled would be tasty, everything else grilled is.

One of the best dishes I've ever had was grilled baby octopus.

However, octopus is difficult to properly prepare. There is a very fine line between just right and overcooked, which ruins octopus. Thus, that's a dish that I'll leave entirely to the professionals to prepare.

I'm content to handle just the eating part...

Never prepared the dish myself, but I've had it served to me in Japan, on several occasions. It was grilled and was pretty tasty.

Agree with all of this.

If its an adult, I think you have to boil it first, and strip off the skin. Otherwise its too chewy.

Been told octopus is not the easiest ingredient to cook with.

Remember Octos are very smart and called the cocker spaniels of the sea. Not it doesn't stop me either.

Why?? Neither of you has ever cooked an octopus. I've braised it with great results, and I've boiled then grilled it with great results. Both times I just "cooked it until it was done", no fine lines involved. Heck, I didn't even toss a wine cork in the pot.

Octopus - like all seafood - should not be cooked too long. As soon as the color turns opaque, it's ready. Cook it longer than that it'll turn rubbery and tough. I've grilled it, fried it, stir fried it, ate it raw, loved it however I made it.

It's seafood, so it takes less time to cook than meat, that's all.

Edited to add: cleaning it is not that hard. Just pull the long, plastic-like spine out from inside the body and strip the skin (very easy, like peeling a tight saran wrap). If you want to keep the head, remove the mouth by pushing it out with thumb and index finger, and remove the silver pouch that contains the ink sack. That's it.

You just cook it until it's tender again. That's how the braising method works.
