No, refried beans do not have to be pintos; you can even buy canned, refried black beans.
I looked up a number of "black bean puree" recipes online, and some of them called for frying boiled (or canned), mashed beans in oil, and others just blended the beans, added a few spices, and used them in that form. And they weren't always pureed till smooth, either, judging by the photos. No way to tell which way this restaurant prepares them.
Anyway I find it suspicious that the menu of the recipe in question has "black bean puree" all over it, but no mention of refried beans. Refried beans are kind of a staple in Mexican food. I'm guessing they just thought that puree sounds more elegant.
pretty upscale ... "fancified" mexican-style food menu, looking pretty far removed from the foods I've eaten in Baja and mainland Mexico. Most of their items sound way overblown, overproduced, over sauced, with way too many flavors competing for your attention. IMO, most of this cuisine isn't so complicated and heavy .... especially for a lunch menu.
I'd give their Ceviche a try ... either the appetizer or the meal platter version.
Otherwise, the lamb barbacoa burrito might be interesting.
Perhaps one of their soups would be worth trying ....
I'd be interested in some of their pescado dishes, but at these prices and what looks like it could be overblown production, only for a main dinner meal. Would probably order this and their lamb or pork with a dining companion and we'd share the two dishes.
It's hard to recommend for someone else. The Canadian/Mexican restaurant's menu is very different from what you see in Hispanic Port Chester or New Rochelle. That being said I like:
Tacos de Cochinita. Cochinita Pibil is a pretty traditional regional dish that you won't find at most Mexican restaurants. It's delicious and braised meat is hard to mess up

Yucatan. I've had it in several restaurants in Los Angeles as tacos and as a plate and it's always been great.
The food in the Yucatan was to die for....
