NONE of these establishments actually "cook" their food...it's pre-cooked, frozen, then heated up, kind of like "airplane food" used to be.

Do you like to eat chemicals? If so, buy a frozen TV dinner & eat that at home...same "food", just cheaper, plus you can watch Netflix.

Well, to be fair...I ate at an expensive non-chain seafood restaurant on the coast of California a few days ago and my exact words were "Red Lobster is better." And what's sad is, Red Lobster really is better. The food was pretty bad.

Never cared for Applebee's. The food is just reheated slop made who knows where. I hate the decor too. IHOP is a step up from Denny's. That isn't saying much, but both the IHOPs in my town are clean and have good service too.

I've always hated Applebee's. My 7-year-old can't get enough of IHOP -- hope our local branch isn't closing. I never really got what people hated about IHOP. I went to a beloved pancake place in Connecticut on a road trip last weekend -- I love it and have been there several times, but is it really any better than IHOP? IHOP probably sucks if you're ordering the non-breakfast food, but why would you do that? You're at IHOP. I certainly don't. Maybe it's that they seem vaguely dirty, but so does every crusty old diner that people wax nostalgic about.

In my opinion IHOP is the bottom of the barrel in the greasy spoon chain category.

xxxx.
Oh, God, are they ever ! I Hop is one of those places where you only go when you have left a club at 2 am, are drunk as a skunk, and want some place that is open all night. I don't think anyone goes there sober just to enjoy a good meal.

MarciaMashaMarcia, you are so right, these chains are what I call upscale fast food. Of course most of their food is frozen and simply reheated.

I wonder how many people realize boneless wings are really not wings at all and have a lot of fillers, not always the best quality. It is a matter of opinion and taste, but they are not wings.

"The casual-dining segment, where both chains are positioned, is experiencing increased troubles as more customers have gravitated to the quick-service restaurants like Panera Bread or Chipotle Mexican Grill, many of which market themselves as offering healthier and more upscale food."

OMG. If people believe Panera and Chipotle are healthy and upscale then we really are on the precipice of Idiocracy.
