Pork and sauerkraut for good luck in the coming year in Ohio; it's a German tradition.

My Polish family eats pickled herring after midnight. I never quite got into that tradition; I'd much rather eat black eyed peas.

Interesting! One of my ex's is from Ohio and the first time we went up there to visit her family it was over New Years and yep, that was what they had. Good stuff...although I pat myself on the back in that I had the foresight to bring along some black-eyed peas as well!

My mother says you can't start the new year without pork and saurkraut - yuk.
She says it will bring luck throughout the new year.

Our family makes an Italian dish called bagna cauda on New Year's Day. It has nothing to do with being in Utah and everything to do with being Italian. Bagna (bohn-yuh) cauda (cow-duh) is Italian for hot bath. The dish is made of anchovies, butter, garlic and cream. Some families make it without the cream but we think it's too oily without it. The ingredients are cooked in an electric frying pan which is centered in the middle of the table. The chairs are removed and everyone stands around the table, dipping raw vegetables into the mixture once it has cooked down a bit. My family prefers cabbage, lettuce, celery and mushrooms. The mushrooms are really good if you let them sit and sauté a while before eating them. A thick sliced piece of french bread is used to catch any drippings as you bring the dipped vegetable up to your mouth to eat. In between batches of the bagna cauda, you eat the bread.

Most people turn up their noses when you mention anchovies. I have 3 friends who have dared to try it and liked it and I have two childhood friends who still call me around the holidays to ask if they can come join in the feast.
