Hub and I normally cook from scratch, but our year has gotten off to a busy start, so I decided to try some Schwan frozen foods (a home delivery company). I ordered about 20 things so I'd have lots of easy meals in the freezer for busy days. I didn't expect them to taste like home-cooking, obviously. Most of the things have been ok, not fabulous, and were more expensive than frozen entrees I've seen (not tried) at the grocery.

Are there any grocery frozen main dish things you'd recommend?

Do you have a restaurant supply house near you ? They have the frozen entrées that you get when you eat in restaurants. I think my home cooking is better, but at least the frozen entrées are good. They come in large amounts but if you read the package carefully, a lot of the items are frozen in individual servings.

If not, it can be repackaged. I buy the panko breaded butterfly shrimp and it is individual frozen but packaged in layers. I simply open the box and repackage into serving size portions and keep it frozen. The same with the rolled tacos. I open the box and repackage and they make a good fast zap meal, especially if you add some canned refried beans and frozen Mexi-corn.

Some of the frozen desserts and bakery items are quite good, often already divided into portions and often less expensive than the bakery at the grocery store.

There is frozen soup that comes in a bag. I haven't bought any but I've spoken to people who are buying it and they called it "good as home made". I guess that depends upon how good a cook they are, but it is at least worth trying a bag.

If you have a Cash And Carry or a Smart And Final Iris, their house brand is First Street and everything of theirs I've tried is quite good. They make the best cheese and bacon and the canned goods and sauces are always good.

I have very limited exposure to frozen entrees

Those few I do remember being much better than expected were: Stoeefers macaronni and cheese and a few diff varieties of large pre-made lasagna ( cannot recall manuf names )

Not too many foods are / entree's are good quality when reborn from a frozen state.

Maybe others know of some I do not ............

I love Marie Callendars Pot Pies...the 1# ones. The flaky crust is super good and so is the filling.

Marie Callender's pot pies. They have a suggestion to cook in microwave. I prefer to cook them in the oven.

Second this. Much, much better in the oven. Serve with a lightly-dressed salad, they are very rich.

I also like the stouffer's lasagna in a pinch, and Lean Cuisines while not awesome, do not have a bunch of weird ingredients on the label. I tend to prefer the pasta flavors.

If you live near a Trader Joe's. They are somewhat healthier;some have less salt and no trans fats, lower sat. fats. Taste pretty good and don't cost too much. I've gotten their Rice bowl w/ chicken before, pretty good.

I like some of the Stouffer's entrees, but I usually only buy them when Publix puts the family size ones on sale for $4.99

I usually get...

Grandmas Chicken & Rice Bake
Meat Lovers Lasagna
Mexican Lasagna
Cordon Bleu pasta

Amy's frozen mac & cheese is the best I've tried. It comes in gluten-free, dairy free and regular. Taste homemade.

EVOL is really good in a pinch. I like their steak stir-fry and enchiladas.
