Just a few years ago, OpenTable seemed to have owned the restaurant reservation market. But now, there are quite a few smaller competitors that have a good number of participating restaurants in bigger markets. According to UPDATED: As Fees Become Problematic, Restaurants Move Away from OpenTable, But Do They Stay Away? | Houston Press, OpenTable charges restaurants quite a bit: $1295 for the software, $1 per reservation, and $199/month, and that may leave an opening for the competitors.

When booking restaurants in the past, it might have even been possible to simply ignore restaurants not on OpenTable. OpenTable still seems to offer the best user experience on the desktop, though the diner reviews could be improved. What is your restaurant booking process? Are you a fan of OpenTable's convenience or do you use other services as well?

I use open table anytime I make a dinner reservation out but not for your run of the mill places. I use it when we make reservations at nicer pricier restaurants about 2 -3 times a year. You get points and can redeem for a gift card. I use yelp for all of my reviews.

I eat out so infrequently, and it's such a planned experience (hours of driving and possibly flights involved) that I know Well ahead of time where I'll be eating. Then I call them directly, from my home landline phone. :P

I rarely need to make reservations. The last time I did was for Thanksgiving, and I used OpenTable.

I somehow made it to age 39 without ever making a reservation at a restaurant in my life, but it's nice to have options.

Our restaurant uses Open Table and we are very happy with the software.

We are always booked for Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday brunch by Wednesday at the latest so the software helps us fill in odd times.

I use OpenTable often and find it really easy to use. What I donít like is some hotter restaurants will always block out prime time slots, yet when you call, they have availability. Iím sure they do that to save the fee. I hope restaurants keep using it. I donít like going to places that wonít accept some form of online reservation.

We haven’t made a reservation since the WWW became available for private use. Being far from any large city most likely no reservation service will be in part funded by us.
