There's a guy in my office that makes a bag of popcorn every morning and every afternoon. The smell drives me nuts, it's so disgustingly greasy-fake-butter smell. (To say nothing of what it's doing to his arteries *shudder*)

Anyone else just grossed out by microwave popcorn odor?

LOL...I don't like microwave popcorn at all for some reason. It just doesn't taste right to me. I do like fresh-popped movie popcorn though, but without the fake butter oil they put on it.

It's not my favorite at all, but it's hard to turn down popcorn.

I use Alton Brown's microwave method sometimes. Take 1/3 c. popcorn and put it in a lunch-size brown paper bag. Roll the end twice and put one staple in each end to hold it closed.

You don't add the butter or oil until after the corn is popped. It's not the microwave that makes it gross, it's the nasty chemicals they put all over the kernels!

Yep, I know...it's just that they are indeed nasty...and it seems the cheaper varieties stink more. LOL

I know of what you speak - that cloying smell that seems to permeate the whole office with rich, buttery fakeness. I get grossed out worse on that than when someone brings in fish. One time someone burned their popcorn in the microwave to such a degree that the smoke was billowing from the kitchen out into the whole lobby and up the halls - it was difficult to even take a breath. The microwave was literally toast.

I can't agree with you here. To me, there is NOTHING worse than the coworker who brings in fish and heats it in the microwave. Should be grounds for immediate dismissal if you ask me!!

I hate it too, at my last job the break room always smelled like it. It was a factory, and sometimes the smell would even spill out into the work area (gag!). Sometimes when I'm somewhere like Lowe's or Wal-Mart and near their employee break room I still have to smell it. I think it's EVERYWHERE.

Popcorn Lung Disease: ABC News: Popcorn May Cause Lung Disease

Print it out and tape it to the microwave... might just work.
