Default Ideas for food to take when someone has died?

What are some good ideas for food to take to someone's house when there's been a death? Not for the reception after the funeral, but between the death and the services. I'm anticipating needing to prepare something in the next few days.

Would a cheese and cracker tray be too festive or party like?

Is there anything you've received that was really appreciated? Anything that just sat there and got thrown away?

Any ideas will be appreciated.

A relative of mine lost her husband recently (very suddenly) and her neighbors were fantastic. She said they didn't have to cook for a week and were really grateful.

Thay brought her a chilli con carne, a lasagna, a big homemade pizza - nothing fancy but good homemade things that could go in the freezer or keep for a few days.

In the end, it's the thought that counts. You are very kind to think of them...

Perhaps a crockpot dinner, or a nice pot of spaghetti w/ garlic bread. Im sure others will take care of the time after the service, if not, its no big loss. I think the cooked dinners will be more appreciated and definitely best. They will not be in the spirit to cook during the first few days. It's very nice of you to think of them..

A frozen casserole to put in the freezer, with instructions for reheating. After everything else is gone, but the grieving is still going on, it will be very welcome.

I agree with the other posters, soup, casseroles, etc. I'm sure anything already made will be appreciated.

I've brought baked hams, rolls, cake. I remember when my B-I-L passed away many years ago-everytime we opened the door at his house there would be things like butter, milk, homemade breads, cakes, baked beans, hams. What a blessing it was such a Godsend.

Wonderful of you to think of them at this time.

I have brought baked ziti, sausage, onions, peppers and roasted potatoes, chicken parm. I buy the foil 8" cake pans from the $ store and these meals freeze well. It is very generous and thoughtful of you.

Thats a great idea to send it over to them in a foil pan. They are very sturdy and prevent messy dishes for clean up. They freeze well also. If they are not going to be up for cooking , surely they won't feel like doing dishes! It also avoids the problem of getting your dish back

The foil pans work out very well. We do a lot of bardering here in South. Once a month I bring food over to the Vet and he takes care of our Samoyed. I certainly get the better deal. At the Dollar store you get 3-4 8" cake pans for $1.00. I did that Easter with our friends to bring leftovers home. I don't have to worry about getting my good containers back.
