I just had a donut. Already sweet as is (it's a donut), but then glazed, then frosted, then adorned with sprinkles, then topped with cream. I feel like I need an insulin injection. Something tells me this trend is more for the eye than the tongue; likewise the cupcakes -- two inches high, and sweet enough with nothing on them -- with six inches of frosting on top. I find all of our desserts too sweet compared to the European versions I've sampled. Anyone else?
Yes. I find our desserts sweeter than most other cultures, EU, Asian, etc.

Honey bbq, & other sweet sauces. even Chinese food in the States is much sweeter than Chinese food in Europe, ( they cater to local palates). At least that has been my comparison. Adding sugar to coleslaw, chili. or marinara, is common practice here, but I never do it, in my home.

That's true! I was recently reading the labels on cans of baked beans; 12-14 grams of sugar in the most popular brand. Yuck! I finally found a "bargain" brand with just 7.
My pet peeve is internet recipes with way too much sugar. We're trained from an early age to expect sweetness in all our foods. Sugar is as addictive as nicotine and food companies are more than happy to sell us a fix.
I like and eat my fair share of candy, but I don't want EVERYTHING to taste like candy. Is it just America's penchant for exaggerating everything; if some is good, more is better?
The only cake frostings I like are chocolate: ganache, whipped cream, or American buttercream. Or else lemon curd with fruit and whipped cream on 1-2-3-4 (yellow) cake. I hate most buttercream, especially the Crisco variety.
I ALWAYS have to scrape off the (two inches of) cake frosting and just take a little dab with each bite of cake. As I say, it seems it's all for looks and not for taste, and yet most people just eat it up. I don't remember the homemade desserts my mother and grandmother baked being like this.
