Not just Middle Easterners; Japan and Korea have many krispy kremes. I'm sure San Francisco can't be more health conscious than Korea or Japan.

I think the distaste for "American sweet" may come from the fact that the refined white sugar sits on top of refined white flour. I believe the makeup of the dough has a lot to do with the perception and agreeableness of the dessert by those to whom it is new, regardless of toppings added.
