I didn't know if this would go in Health and Wellness or here maybe with people being knowledgeable about canning-type issues.
My single-serving greek yogurt container has the typical foil-type lid you pull back. I immediately noticed it was puffed out and very taut where always before it is just flat and has a slight amount of give to it.
I pulled back the lid carefully thinking maybe it was moldy or otherwise bad but it looks just fine and smells fine. The consistency is the same as usual. It just made me think of the warnings to not use canned goods if lids were distended. To be clear, it's not like it had been opened or tampered with.
I'm at work and starving so I can't just get another container...ha. What are everyone's thoughts?
I experienced this dilemma was a higher-tier "Icelandic" yogurt. Gases had built up under the foil and caused the initial smell to be foul. Setting the container on the counter, stirring, and verifying the texture was completely smooth, I smelled the yogurt again. Fresh. Edible. I did not get sick.
It's the gases in these organic / boutique yogurts that are off-putting. Completely normal. Abide by the date, appearance, and the SECOND smell. Enjoy!
I think it got warm somewhere along the line, which causes the active cultures to become more active. As long as it's properly cold when you eat it and you didn't die, it's fine.
