They're cheap cakes. I think I spend more on some of the cakes I make. So I could see people buying these cakes to pass them off as their own creation without any of the time commitment.
Now that I think about it, I wonder if you can order an unfrosted, undecorated cake. I am not a baker but I actually enjoy the decorating part. I could definitely get behind the idea of getting a freshly baked from scratch cake that I could decorate myself and claim credit for. And honestly, I could definitely do a much better job on the decorating.
I think cakes like this will become more common as many bakers these days don't want to put time, effort and artistry into their creations anymore. The "Naked Wedding cake" is a trend (totally ugly cakes, IMO) where they just layer stacks of cake and frost between the layers and dump some flowers on top. But if you like these wedding cakes don't ever pay more than $25 for one. There is no effort in creating them.
If the baker gets some orders and has an opportunity to practice more, I expect the quality of the work will improve.
There are so many cooking and baking shows now with high-level professional bakers showing off their skills that everyone has come to expect an extremely high level of finish on baked goods. These cakes are definitely not in that league, but then again, the baker is not charging the high-end prices that those celebrity bakers charge. I would definitely order a basic cake from this baker at those prices, especially if the taste of the cake was good.
I think it's brave of Sam to make this effort. I hope he/she succeeds.
Sam has definitely made a bunch of cakes and they aren't pretty at all. But hey, if they are selling then why not? More power to them for going for it.
I find the cakes made at Publix to be beautiful, delicious and reasonably priced.
My daughter makes special cakes for my grandchildren's birthdays that are amazing - pirate theme, dinosaur theme, one shaped like a roller skate, etc. but would cost a fortune to have made because she spends many hours planning them and sculpting things by hand.

I'm not a big fan of frosting, so I'm enjoying that these types of cakes are trendy. It still takes some effort to make sure each layer looks good. With frosting, its much easier to hide any imperfections the cakes might have.
